Ford's: C-segment platform underpins several families of vehicles.

The company revealed a slew of C-segment vehicles at the Detroit auto show on Monday, including the C-Max people hauler, accompanied by hybrid and plug-in electric versions.


The C in Ford's C-segment platform could stand for cash--if things go as the Blue Oval hopes and consumers turn to its range of small vehicles built on similar underpinnings.

Executive chairman Bill Ford Jr. said the company expects to turn a profit with its smaller offerings, known as C-segment cars.

Ultimately, this has to be a business for us--or we wouldn't be in it, Ford said.

Ford is also optimistic about the prospects of electric vehicles built on the small platform.

As volume ranges up, costs will come down, Ford said.
